The tin cover has a built in sliding blade, viewed from inside the cover and outside. The soldier removes the top cover, pushes the blade from the outer edge of the cover with a screwdriver tip to the end of the channel. The cover is then put back on the tin and compressed until the angular blade punctures the tin. The cover is then twisted in either direction thereby cutting through the sealed tin.
There are 48 rounds in the tin. The Dutch Luger came with a magazine in the gun and a twin magazine pouch requiring at a maximum 36 rounds. The soldier could remove as many rounds as required and use the top cover to seal the container.
